The east coast blizzard as seen from space on January 22, 2016

As the winter storm makes its way through the mid-Atlantic region of the East Coast, dumping snow and stalling traffic, NASA and NOAA have had their satellites trained on it. This image is one of the latest images they've released of the storm, taken by NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite using the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite instrument at about 2:35 am EST on January 22.

The storm clouds are seen blanketing an enormous expanse of the country as they move east. The night lights of urban areas in the Continental U.S. are visible as the bright spots in this image, while less-populated rural areas are darker.
